The Olympic dream is every athlete’s greatest aspiration. When a child begins to practice a sport, they dream of competing in the Olympics and exalting their country and flag at the highest level. For 70 years, the Dominican Republic has been building this dream. Many GLORIES have emerged on the road leading towards that dream, these Glories fill us with pride and have become role models for the younger generations.
This book is a tribute to all those men and women that have worked to organize Dominican sports since 1945. Since the creation of the first National Olympic Committee in 1946, our country has achieved numerous milestones, that range from hosting the Central American and Caribbean Games for the first time to the dubbed-golden decade of Dominican sports, which started in the 2003 Pan American Games. We narrate the devotion of all that effort, placing the athletes that have triumphed at a Pan American or Olympic level, as the main characters: from the bronze won by Pedro Julio Nolasco in Los Angeles 1984, to the double gold obtained by Félix Sánchez in Athens 2004 and London 2012, and the bronze won by Luisito Pie in Rio 2016.
At INICIA, we are convinced that our youth needs leaders, heroes and people who inspire them to be better. As a result, in 2009 we started an investment program for high-performance athletes, along with the Dominican Olympic Committee, which became CRESO (known for its official name in Spanish: Creando Sueños Olímpicos – Creating Olympic Dreams) a non-profit organization that allocates resources for sports and academic training for these athletes. CRESO originated from the joint efforts of other leading local businesses, which share the values that promote sports and education.
